Seniors Get a Big Win, and Their Love

Responding to the love and support of nearly 6,000 fans in the Kennel for Senior Night, Marquise Carter and Robert Sacre led their Gonzaga Bulldogs to victory.
In the 92-60 win over Virginia-based Longwood University, Gonzaga senior Carter scored 13 points and five assists while senior Robert Sacre chalked up five points and six rebounds at the McCarthy Athletic Center on Monday.
Carter was placed in the starting lineup for senior night and the last game of the season in the Kennel when the Bulldogs hosted Longwood’s Lancers.
“They scheduled this easy game for senior night,” said Michelle Dapper SWX Sports Journalist. “It’s the Zags' final hurrah at the kennel and they wanted an easy win for the seniors […] but I give kudos to Longwood; everyone knows the Kennel is a tough place to play,” said Dapper.
Longwood deployed a team of only seven players, who were led by players Antwan Carter, scoring 18 points, and Tristan Carey, scoring 16. They put up somewhat of a fight according to Gonzaga coach Mark Few.
“Those two young guys played pretty efficiently in their limited minutes,” said Few.
Gonzaga played consistently throughout the game, said Few. “Everybody got out there and played well. Nobody got hurt. Mission accomplished,” he said. “I’m glad both (seniors) played well,” Few added.
The final game in the Kennel brought bittersweet feelings for senior Robert Sacre. “It’s crazy – the last time in the kennel […] it’s not what you’re used to, having the love and support of 6,000 people. It seems like everything went by so quick,” he said. “I’m so happy to have had a decent game,” said Sacre.
Teammate Marquise Carter expressed similar feelings. “I wanted to come out there and have a decent game,” said Carter. “I wanted to come over and win the game big,” he said.
The end of the season brings bittersweet feelings not only for the players, but for the fans, observed Linda Keturakat, a season ticket holder.
“It’s sad that it’s already the final game […] it’s the only thing we look forward to in the winter,” said Keturakat. Being a season ticket holder means a lot to her, she said. “It’s a family thing […] and it’s a social event.”
The men’s Gonzaga Bulldogs will be heading down to Las Vegas to compete in the WCC tournament at the Orleans Arena where they are seeded second.
The Zags won’t know who they are up against until late in the week, but they need to be prepared for anything, according to Few.
“We’re taking a day or two off before Vegas […] and we’re taking one day at a time,” said Few.
